The hosted rival Aitkin last Friday night for the annual Stump Game. The two teams have played for the Stump Trophy since 1974. It also happened to be C-I’s homecoming.
The Rangers offense drew first blood Friday night. A long pass from Dakota Mitchell to Dietrich Winegarner on the game’s first play set up Nate Williams for a 30 yard touchdown scamper on the next play.
The other score of the 1st half came on a 5 yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Anthony Hudrlik. Mitchell ran in the 2 point conversion to put C-I up 14-0 at half.
The Ranger defense held Aitkin to under 100 yards of total offense in the first half.
Aitkin came out strong in the 2nd half and scored a touchdown on their first drive to make the score 14-8. The teams played to a stalemate the rest of the 3rd quarter.
In the 4th quarter, the Rangers increased their lead to 20-8 on a 1 yard touchdown pass from Mitchell to Gabe Kramer.
The Gobblers added a touchdown late in the 4th, but C-I recovered the onside kick to seal the victory.
The Rangers out gained the Gobblers 360-237 on the night. C-I also created 4 turnovers on defense, including three interceptions by Matt Christopher in the secondary.
The Rangers now move to 2-3 on the season. This Friday they travel to Moose Lake-Willow River for an important section match-up.
